Final Thoughts.....

This book brought tears to my eyes through out! I want to think as myself as a strong woman in today's society, however reading this book makes me wonder what some women think about themselves! I did enjoy reading this book, it really opened my eyes.

Some of the things in this book made me sick to my stomache, why some women can't break the cycle and let things happen over and over when reality there is help, but they as people have to realize their inner voice and inner self to get it. I wonder if they were to look at women today what the outcome would be?

This has been a very interesting read, and to be honest I don't think I would of read this book if it wasn't on the list, but I am truly glad that is was. For I see things somewhat differently, but I still do not understand how a women could be so quiet, we all need to have a voice so that mean every women needs to find it!!

Chapter 10 Connected Teaching

Connected Teaching
  1. Sharing the Process
  2. The Teacher as Mid-wife
  3. Connected Class
I really like the one " The Teacher as Mid-wife. I never looked at a mid-wife in that nature! I can actually picture at. The mid-wife helps draw out the knowledge, or expand on their knowledge.

To me one has to be connected in a classroom, or the learning environment doesn't exist for the student. The teacher might lead, but the student can not depend on that teacher to expand their knowledge the student needs to do that on their own.

Objectivity in Connected Teaching:
I really enjoyed what the 56 year old women said about her adult program, she keeps discovering things inside herself, what she sees herself for the first time through the eyes of others! That to me was powerful.

Teachers are in a powerful position, and from that I only hope if I decide to teach one day that I can be an instructor who is powerful in knowledge so others can build on theirs!

Chapter 9 Toward an Education for Women

This chapter starts out with two women, their first experience in a college class, and I do not understand why one dropped a class just because of the instructors opening thoughts. To me, she is the one being a coward and not stepping up to the plate to learn or want to learn something new. How can you prove something to the world if you dont take that first step.

(p.193)
"A women, like any other human being, does need to know that the mind makes mistakes; but our interviews hae convinced us that every woman, regardless of age, social class, ethinicity, and acadmeic achievement, needs to know that she is capable of intelligent though, and she needs to know it right away."

~WOW!~

I sit here and think to myself, I never thougth I was dumb, or not intelligent enough to go to college or do anything that I wanted to do. So my question is, why does it say all women? I know plenty of women who know they are intelligent in their own ways and they caring themselves very well!

Being 34, I have seen a lot of things in my life. I never have let one thing ever beat me, nor get me down. I listen to my inner voice, my outter voice and other so I can make my own decisions on a level that is respectful to all. What I don't understand is how women think so low of themselves!  Why must one complain about their instructor, change it, do whatever it takes to make it better for you, just don't sit there and complain, who cares if one complains, what is that going to do for you.

College for me was an eye opener, and I loved every minute of it! It was a challenge, and I welcomed it.

Chapter 8, Family LIfe and Politics of Talk

Descriptions of family life that the women shared in this chapter suggest that Tolstoy’s observation that “happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way” is not quite right (p.155).

In this chapter it talks about family and how it all begins for the women they talked to. I just have issues with this chapter; well I have issues with this whole book thus far! I just do not understand how a mother can sit back and watch things unfold, and then blame their own flesh and blood for their husband’s actions….WRONG!

There is a topic called Breaking the Cycle…for me if one comes from family or any type of family that shows abuse whether it is mental or physical the cycle needs to be broken, but the question is how?

This whole chapter disturbs me, makes me sick to think that a mother could be like that! I look at my relationship with my mom, and her relationship with her mom and I only hope that I can be just as great of a mom as mine and my grandma! I just can’t fathom why a mom wouldn’t protected their own daughter, would they if it was her son??

This chapter has a lot to handle, from Stories of Family as Told by the Silent to Guiding Metaphors. For me, it is quiet depressing and I often wonder why women have to be silent. In today’s society are women still this silent or more women are more vocal.

Chapter 7 Constructed Knowledge: Intergrating the Voice

The Passionate knower stuck out for me. To be able to find yourself when one feels lost or out of their circle. I can understand why some women feel that they are lost once they get married and start a family, however, I can't imagine why they would feel lost in a circle they are familiar with.

For me, my children are my life, work is second. So I am very passionate about my children and how I raise them. Why can't people just stop and be able to watch what is around them? It is a great feeling when you find yourself again, even though you may not of been lost, but rediscovering yourself after years once might find it simply amazing. Life can be so simple if let be.

Everyone should have passion, some just need to find it! It is a search that is nevering ending for the truth!

Chapter 6: Procedural Knowledge: Separate and Connected Knowing

In this chapter the title says it all...and this was a long chapter. So two words Separate & Connected

Separate Knowing: The women that were spoken about were those who graduated for traditional, elite, liberal arts colleges. These women know have critical thinking skills, or a game in which they called in the book “doubting game".

Issues that I do have with reading this chapter is one of them using "Tomboy “stated when a girl acted like a boy in early adolescence exhibited high intellectual competence in late adolescence...my thoughts what about a girl who played with dolls, did they not show competence either? I do understand the study, but I really don't care for it!

Separate Knowers, tough minded, nothing gets past them, they look for something wrong. So Doubting is one aspect of separate knowers...

Connect Knowing: to connect with others and understand their experiences. In connect knowing there is the "believing game". Really being able to listen to another person. Feeling of closeness rather than distance, getting to know a person and their thought process. Learn by just listening to the person who is talking.

This chapter was long and hard to get through with so much information about Separate and Connected. If I were to take a look at myself, I would have to say I am more of a Connected type, I was a tomboy when I was younger, however I do not find myself intellectual, could be in the future if I keep continuing my education, but not as we speak. I like to listen to others and learn from them.

Chapter 5 Procedural Knowledge: The Voice of Reason

This chapter I can actually relate to! The voice of reason makes me think of my teenage years along with my years in college! Reflecting on my own life, I can now realize why my parents did the things they did. Growth within is made me who I am today, without the issues and problems that I come across and figured out, I wouldn't who I am today.

The two women in this chapter I can relate to, both of them. When one finally opens their eyes fully, then one will see why and realize that what they are learning is for their own good, not for the teacher or the parents. I look back at my parents and why did they do the things they did when it came to me, and now I know and I only hope I can be as great of a parent as they were to me!

Listening to your invoice is not always right, but don't stop listening to it, just don't always act on it! Feelings are wonderful and learning how to control them is even better. Naomi was having issues about writing a paper on a painting, what her instructor really wanted and when it stated " You can like a piece that someone else doesn't like, and you have to decide yourself" (p.89). For me this is true about anything in life, just because my friend or my husband likes something doesn't mean I have to.

In previous chapter they discussed subjective knowledge; this chapter was about procedural knowledge. Procedural knowledge pays attention to objects in the external world. For me, I would have to say being able to understand what someone else is wants and giving in to that person, but not letting go of my own personal ideas and thoughts throughout the process. Everyone has opinions whether we like it or not, just sometime it is better off not speaking them.

Chapter 4 Subjective Knowledge: The Quest of Self

Walking away from your past and starting over is what these women have done. They wanted out, and really they did not care what was ahead of them as long as they were out of their current situation. A new found sense about leaving and starting over, it opens them up to new life experiences.

I can see where these women can feel the way they do or what they are feeling. What I can see is how they can't help themselves at times. No women need to feel second best to their husband, to their boyfriend. Strength comes within and these women are just now finding it, some in their early twenties others in late forties, but it is there. Life hands you a deck of cards, make you hand the best it can be while playing, and these women are making it the best by getting out of old stale environments and learning how to become a person not someone's possession.

What I have learned so far is that these women love to listen to others, and that lets them build on their own self imagine. What has bothered me the most in this chapter is when they were talking to young college sophomore who has been depressed, talked about multiple truths and realities in life, she stated her question….Why do people live?? How does one respond to such a comment?

So my question is, how can one improve their own life today if one looks back on the past?? What would you change and why?

Chapter 3 Subjective Knowlege: The Inner Voice

Women are making a turn towards subjectivism...no longer willing to rely on others, such as people with a higher status as them or a person with authority. These women are turning to people they can trust, other women that have meaning in their lives and have been there with them and for them.

I found this chapter very disturbing, in a way that in my world we only hear of such things and never have had a friend live it and I am grateful for that! I can understand why women in certain situations feel powerless, helpless and worthless. Men look for a weak women, and that is not me being mean towards a women, it is because the man who finds the weak is weak himself. He would not know how to act if another man would treat him the way he treated his wife or girlfriend. So I feel men do prey on the weak, just so they can feel superior in ways.

The women they kept going back to throughout this chapter made me realize that yes, go with your gut, cause your gut will lead you in the right direction, it is your own body telling you not you listening to someone else, I found this women an inspiration for others to learn from, she would be very interesting to listen to, to let her talk about her life where she has been and where she is going!

Knowledge is a powerful thing, some women need to realize that and use what they know now and build on it for the future. This chapter was an eye opener for me. I am lucky to have come from an wonderful and giving family and I am thankful everyday. I will pass along what I have learned from my parents to my three daughters.

Chapter 2 Received Knowledge: Listening to the Voices of Others

I understand the women in this chapter. I get them, but what I don't get is how they build knowledge but they do not let it show. Trusting themselves is hard; they are scared to speak because words might come out wrong. I feel that way as I am typing this, but that doesn't mean I am dumb, just means that maybe my thought process is somewhat different than others.

There are several thoughts running through my head, but one that sticks out is how one person can look to others for knowledge, but doesn't see themselves as growing. Could be an expert at something, however could not speak in front of people to let others receive the knowledge.

I found that the confidence levels of these women are low, and that is something I can really relate with. I am not confident in myself at times, but I do give myself the benefit of the doubt when I can. I also do not agree with my friends like the college girls did, if I do not want to do something, I won't!
What I took the most from this chapter is how everyone listens...and stated that they are learning from listening, and actually enjoyed listening to people and each woman was different in the reasoning. I think overall it is an underlining bond that women need.

I can see myself in way while reading this chapter, but I will return knowledge as much as I can, I like to be able to help others in understanding something that I might know more about than most.

Silence...

As I was reading through this first chapter, I thought to myself, I could never be the silent type...but what worries and bothers me is that so many women today are the silent type. There are so many thoughts that I have about this chapter. For me, it hurts to read this, because it makes us "women" look weak in a sense. Today, there is no reason why women can not have a voice being there are so many outlets for us to turn to!

Maintaining the Women's Place, I found horrible. A women should not feel threatened in her own home, let alone her family. I do not understand why a women can stay, but I have never been in a situation where I have been beaten or threatened. I know a friend of mine, one of her best friends went through this, and it took her years to say anything, but she finally got away. For me, you touch me one in a way that would hurt me, you wouldn't get a second chance. But, then again, why do men think it is okay to beat on a women, or degrade them in a way that makes them think that they are not good enough?

Conceiving the self, wow, as I read through this, I thought could I actually describe myself to others? My life has changed just like those who were interviewed, my life changed when I had children, they some how take over your life and you are no longer a who you are, you are a mom. So, please do describe onself if one can....

I can say I did not grow up like these women, I had a wonderful childhood, and am able to speak my mind. I am grateful that I am independant in that nature. I would never want my three daughter to feel they could not speak their mind. Life is too short to feel this way!
